The Six Principles of Naturopathy
1. The Healing Power of Nature
Naturopathic doctors believe in an inherent healing capacity within each of us. By removing the obstacles, we enable the healing process to restore an optimal state of health. The naturopathic physician's role is to facilitate and support this process.
2. First Do No Harm
Naturopathic treatments are gentle, non-invasive, and effective with no adverse side effects. Naturopaths seek the most efficient and supportive means of cure while preventing further harm to the body in the process.
3. Identify and Remove the Cause
Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine focus on eliminating the cause of a patient's condition as opposed to just masking the symptoms. For example, treatment plans focus on addressing why a person may suffer from headaches, back pain, P.M.S. or weight problems and to reverse or eliminate these tendencies. This allows the condition to lessen and disappear without a continued need for drugs or further treatment.
4. Treat the Whole Person
The word "holistic" is often used to describe naturopathic physicians, meaning that they view the person as a whole, recognizing the connection between the mind, the emotions and the body. Naturopaths understand that every aspect of a person's lifestyle plays a role in their overall health. Thus, Naturopaths look at everything from heredity, environment, diet, past trauma and the effects of present stressors in their life.
5. The Physician as Teacher
A Naturopath is a person who has devoted their life to understanding health, disease and the human body from an integrated, scientific perspective. The naturopath's role is to teach and share this information to help a person make informed choices about factors that affect their health. Patients are encouraged to accept responsibility for their health and be active participants in their healing process.
6. Prevention
Naturopathic physicians work at every level to avoid future illness. Each aspect of treatment is geared toward supporting health and wellness over a lifetime.
